Newborn Hearing Screening (OAE/ABR)
Signs Your Baby May Need This Test:
- Premature birth or NICU stay
- Family history of hearing loss
- Concerns about your baby not responding to sounds
Who Can Get It Done:
- All newborns within the first month of life (recommended universally)
- Babies with risk factors for hearing loss
When Should It Be Done:
- Immediately after birth (hospital-based screening)
- Within the first few weeks if not done at birth
What Does the Test Assess:
- OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions): Measures inner ear function by detecting sound vibrations.
- ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response): Tests nerve pathways from the ear to the brain.
Possible Results:
- Pass: Normal hearing response
- Refer: Further diagnostic testing needed
Possible Treatment:
- Follow-up diagnostic evaluations (e.g., behavioral audiometry)
- Early intervention, including hearing aids or cochlear implants if necessary
